VIRTUAL

The Virtual Activity "Project Framework" was organized by the corporate organization, the NGO "USGGED" (Sampson, Turkey) and was carried out via the WebEx platform (to allow for breakout sessions), utilizing the Twinspace of the project "Mediterranean Diet for Overall Health".
During the four consecutive days, students and teachers collaborated for the qualitative implementation of the "Project Framework" activity and the achievement of its objectives, namely:
-Information on the project fields, the implementation platform, internet safety,
-Securing some initial findings, through the questionnaires of the MedDiet Score survey,
-Creating a draft of the students' needs that should be taken into account during the design of the three (3) modules of the digital STEM educational course:

  1. Addressing climate change and environmental behavior, with an emphasis on environmental aspects related to food systems,

  2. Overall Health and Nutrition, with emphasis on the Mediterranean Diet as a sustainable dietary model

  3. The Mediterranean Diet as a healthy model for the Environment and People, focusing on dietary traditions in the life cycle and over time, as a foundation for the cultural identity and continuity of communities.

Given the period in which the meeting took place, students participated in the activities either from the school's computer lab or from home.

The work of the activity began on Wednesday, 29/05/2024 with an introductory activity designed with the Web 2.0 tool Miro (How do you feel today?). Then the organizer on behalf of the NGO USGGED presented to the participants, students and teachers, the work program for the next four three-hour meetings. Then, the implementation manager from the coordinating School presented the Erasmus+ MedDiet4Health project and the next steps of implementation in detail. This was followed by presentations of the Organizations (schools and NGOs), cities and countries - through relevant videos and slides prepared by the students - as well as presentations by students and teachers. We continued with the familiarization game "Two truths and a lie" and the day ended with a quiz about the Mediterranean Pyramid, in order to detect the participants' prior knowledge.
On Thursday, 30/05/2024, the activities began with a vote for the project logo. The students from each Organization had created four different logos, and the participants voted for their favorite via Google Forms. The logo that was finally chosen came from the Slovak school. This was followed by a presentation by the organizers on fake news and disinformation, and immediately afterwards, the participants, using the electronic game “Bad News”, collaborated to create their own fake news in order to see how easily it spreads through the internet. This was followed by a presentation of the three pillars of the digital course to be designed. The students’ perspectives, needs and expectations were recorded through the “Students Voices” activity using the lino.it application in breakout sessions, followed by a relevant discussion in plenary, in order to jointly design a rough plan of the program’s contents.
On Friday, 31/05/2024, the activities began with a webinar on Internet Safety, which included topics and practical advice for the protection and security of users, followed by a discussion. Afterwards, a workshop on the use of the project’s Twinspace was held by a representative of the Greek corporate school that is an eTwinning ambassador. The students had the opportunity to suggest their favorite Web2.0 tools on a relevant padlet. Since this day coincided with the “No Smoking Day”, as part of the celebration, presentations were made by the psychologist and the midwife-member of the pedagogical team of the 2nd Evening EPAL of Acharnes, on the topics of “Talking about smoking” and “Nutrition during pregnancy”, respectively. Finally, the students designed a poster for the awareness day, which they initially posted on a board in the Dotstorming application and then created an exhibition of their works through the emaze application.
The fourth and final day, Saturday, 01/06/2024, began with an interactive presentation of the Mediterranean Diet and its basic elements (nutritional, cultural, environmental) by the dietician, a member of the pedagogical team of the 1st EPAL of Nafpaktos, with the participation of students in a question and answer session via Menti on Mentimeter. This was followed by a presentation of the weighted MedDiet Score questionnaire and immediately afterwards the survey was carried out in Webex breakout sessions, in order to obtain initial findings for the program regarding the degree of commitment of participants to the Mediterranean Diet. Students and teachers evaluated the Virtual Activity and students recorded their impressions/decisions through the “Take Home Message” activity in the yoteach.app application. Students left and teachers remained to discuss the formal procedures for the Physical Activity “Project Framework” in Samsun, Turkey, which is scheduled for the period 1-4 October 2024.

PHYSICAL

On Tuesday, 1st of October, the Turkish partners and their students welcomed us at the offices of the NGO USGGED. The project coordinator for USGGED gave a welcome speech, while the coordinator from the 2nd Evening EPAL of Acharnon presented the project. Self-introductions by the participating students and teachers followed, and then the students presented their schools, cities and countries.
Then, the students were divided into transnational groups and participated in “ice-breaking” activities. They filled out a sheet of paper in the shape of a T-shirt with characteristics of themselves, put it on and introduced themselves to the others, with the aim of encouraging acquaintance and strengthening cooperation in the upcoming group activities. This was followed by a seminar on organizing an awareness campaign and a workshop, where the participants, in transnational groups, undertook the organization of an environmental awareness campaign. They were engaged in the production of awareness posters regarding the days "International Awareness Day on Food Loss and Waste", "World Vegetarian Day" and "World Food Day". Once the students had prepared the posters for the environmental awareness campaign, they moved to the city center and specifically to the Bulvar AVM avenue, with the aim of raising public awareness about these issues and informing passers-by. After the awareness campaign, the students enjoyed a city tour.

While the students were preparing the posters, the project coordinators met to assess the progress of the project, regarding the proposed changes to the modules of the e-course and the 80 webQuests (60 related to the 3 project modules and 20 related to World Awareness Days) designed by the teachers of the partner organizations from 24/6 to 25/07/2024, according to the wishes of the students expressed during the virtual trip to Samsun (29/05/2024-01/06/2024) and evaluated by the students of each organization who piloted them from 29/7 to 29/9. These changes were discussed by the coordinators and the adjustments were decided.

On the 2nd of October, participants had the opportunity to visit Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) in Samsun for a day full of educational activities. Dr. Muhammed KOK from the Department of Foreign Language Education presented an enlightening seminar on media literacy and then held the interactive workshops "Can You Tell Truth from Falsehood?" and "The Trustworthiness of Social Media" that challenged everyone to think critically about the information they encounter on the Internet, in general and specifically regarding the Mediterranean Diet. Teachers also had the opportunity to observe a professor during a lecture at the University on classroom management, as part of the exchange of best practices. There was free time to tour the OMÜ campus, followed by contact with Turkish traditional folk art at the Olgunlasma Vocational School, through the work of female artisans who create handmade art and folk crafts. Their collaborative efforts keep Turkey’s cultural traditions alive, transferring these skills to younger generations and ensuring the continuity of intangible cultural heritage. The students there practiced painting with the improvisation technique, using natural dyes from plant materials, such as vegetables and herbs. Through this sustainable process and with reference to the Mediterranean Diet, they highlighted the value of nature as a source of artistic inspiration and strengthened their awareness of environmental sustainability. The day ended with a meal in the same space that had been prepared from local and seasonal products.
On the 3rd of October, the participants traveled to the historical city of Amasya. There, they visited the Food Technology department at the İlduş Hatun Kız Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi Vocational High School, where students and teachers were given a tour of the facilities of both the laboratory and the dining areas where students actively participate in the preparation of meals, while utilizing raw materials produced by the agricultural school of the region. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to attend classes at all levels of education hosted by this building and to explore the museums and attractions of Amasya, gaining cultural knowledge about the region. We visited:

  • the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum which hosts archaeological finds from the region as well as ethnographic exhibits depicting local daily life.

  • the Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin Museum which is dedicated to an important Ottoman physician and highlights the history of medicine in the Ottoman Empire,

  • The Museum of Silas dedicated to the local legend of Ferhat and Sirin, with exhibits that combine art and folklore.

The above museums capture the cultural history and traditions of the region, highlighting the role of local agriculture and nutrition. The Mediterranean Diet, which shares common elements with Turkish culture, is linked to the wealth of products grown in the region. The historical testimonies about the diet and agricultural practices of Anatolia, as presented in these museums, offer a bridge between the tradition of Turkish cuisine and the Mediterranean Diet, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and cultural heritage. The day concluded with a dinner with traditional Turkish cuisine, which shares common elements with the principles of the Mediterranean diet, followed by an event with the awarding of certificates.
On the last day of the Activity (4/10/2024), a visit was made to the Science and Discovery Center, where a seminar and interactive workshop on "Modern Technologies for Digital Education" took place. The students created holograms and handmade greenhouses, where temperature and humidity sensors can be used and plant cultivation can be regulated. They also participated in robotics activities using LEGO Mindstorms. This was followed by a visit to CANİK - Türk Telekom Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lises Vocational High School, where the students attended the "Internet Safety" seminar as well as a seminar and workshop on vertical farming. During the activity, the basic principles and advantages of vertical farming compared to traditional methods (e.g. saving water, energy, pesticides) were presented, hydroponic and aeroponic methods were analyzed, while their applicability in limited spaces, such as urban areas or domestic environments, was also examined. The discussion that followed focused on the contribution of vertical farming to sustainable food production and the connection with the Mediterranean Diet, which supports self-sufficiency and promotes the consumption of fresh, nutritious and local foods, contributing to a balanced and environmentally friendly diet. Finally, the students participated in a practical exercise at the school premises, where a relevant Erasmus+ program had previously been implemented, and they planted vegetables in vertical farming systems, putting into practice what they had learned. At the end of the activities, the meeting was evaluated by students and teachers. The teachers had time to design the Europasses of mobility, to plan the mobility in Slovakia and the coordinators of the partner schools expressed their positive views on the meeting and cooperation of the children. In the farewell speech, the president of USGGED thanked the participants of the program, satisfied that the mobility was a success.
