One Health Concept
In this webquest we hope to gain a better understanding on One Health Concept, as it's all about understanding how human health, animal health, and the environment are connected. It's like looking at the big picture and seeing how everything is related when it comes to keeping everyone healthy.
The term was first used by Professor James in 1947, who was back then the founder and head of the Department of Veterinary Public Health. Nevertheless, scientific and historical research in recent decades have led to the conclusion that the primary reference to One Health has its roots far back in time, back to the father of Modern Medicine, Hippocrates. He was the one who identified the original idea that human health is affected by the quality of the environment, being (actually) dependent on it. (source:https://asclepiusoh.com/en/one-health/)
One Health is defined as “a collaborative, multi-sectoral and transdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal health outcomes recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants and the environment” (AVMA, 2008)
Based to WHO, "involves the public health, veterinary, public health and environmental sectors. The One Health approach is particularly relevant for food and water safety, nutrition, the control of zoonoses (diseases that can spread between animals and humans, such as flu, rabies and Rift Valley fever), pollution management, and combatting antimicrobial resistance (the emergence of microbes that are resistant to antibiotic therapy)".
The One Health approach can be implemented at various levels, from local communities to global scales, and depends on effective governance, communication, collaboration, and coordination. It facilitates a better understanding of the shared benefits, risks, trade-offs, and opportunities, fostering equitable and comprehensive solutions.
Dr. Tania Rödiger-Vorwerk on the opening of the event "Breaking Barriers: Advancing the One Health Agenda with a Focus on Environment” that took place at the Schloss Friedrichsfelde in Berlin (October 12-13/2023), said: “The One Health approach links human and animal health with ecosystem protection. But the nexus between health and environment has not yet received the attention it deserves."
