Mediterranean Diet as a healthy pattern for Environment and Humans

This course integrates principles of health, nutrition, and sustainability with a particular focus on the Mediterranean Diet. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will explore the cultural heritage, health benefits, and environmental sustainability of the Mediterranean Diet, aiming to provide a holistic understanding of how dietary choices impact personal health and the environment, fostering a deeper appreciation a) for the adherence to the Mediterranean Diet for the overall health and b) for the one health concept.

 

Objectives

  • Understand the historical context and cultural significance of the Mediterranean Diet.

  • Investigate traditional agricultural and culinary practices.

  • Analyze the role of the Mediterranean Diet in community identity, continuity, and intercultural dialogue.

  • Study the nutritional value and health impacts of core Mediterranean diet components.

  • Understand the role of regular physical activity and mind-body practices in promoting holistic health.

  • Assess the diet's effectiveness in preventing chronic diseases and enhancing overall well-being.

  • Investigate sustainable farming practices, including organic farming and permaculture.

  • Examine the environmental footprint of Mediterranean foods, focusing on carbon and water usage.

  • Explore strategies to reduce food waste and promote sustainable meal planning.

  • Learn cooking tips and meal planning strategies inspired by Mediterranean cuisine.

  • Discover budget-friendly methods to incorporate Mediterranean foods.

  • Adapt the Mediterranean Diet to fit diverse family and cultural backgrounds.

  • Organize campaigns to highlight the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet.

  • Develop personal action plans to incorporate Mediterranean dietary practices into daily life.

  • Overcome barriers to adopting the Mediterranean Diet, such as access to ingredients and budget constraints.
